Sarah Courtney, an apprentice bench joiner with Patton joinery, picked up the National Association of Shopfitters annual 2nd year Apprentice Prize in London. Sarah is not only the first female to ever take the top prize which consists of a trophy, certificate and a cheque, she is also the first apprentice from NI to receive the award.

Over 100 CIOB members and guests from across the province attended the 2009 Annual CIOB Lecture, sponsored by CITB. This presentation was delivered by Andy McCrea representing Action Renewables, Alan Johnston and Stephen McCready of Sky Developments and Noel Rice from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, entitled ‘Tomorrows energy today, sustainable energy solutions for our future needs.’

ConstructionSkills in Northern Ireland, in conjunction with Morgan Est Farrans and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), recently hosted a site visit and careers information day at Belfast Sewers Project Duncrue, for 8 local careers teachers. Allowing visitors to get first hand information of this innovative project and how it reflects current and ever changing construction methods, teachers were brought up to speed on the range of career options that are now available across the industry.

ConstructionSkills in NI have launched a unique contextualised resource to address Essential Skills in the construction industry. ‘Essential Skills Communication for Construction’ has been developed to address the literacy Essential Skills components of apprenticeship training. It is intended that this vocationally contextualised resource will support Essential Skills Literacy tutors in their efforts to make programmes for construction students vocationally relevant – so also assisting with apprentice achievement and retention rates

Construction bosses are being urged to maintain a commitment to staff training to preserve the industry’s workforce during a recession, as new figures from the Construction Skills Network (CSN) paint a picture of the skills needs and growth rates for the 2009 and 2013 period.

The current economic downturn in the construction industry has undoubtedly put financial constraints on many companies. It is important however for employers to retain skilled, qualified staff to win contracts and stay in business. Training can help employers survive the downturn and CITB grant can help to fund it. The CITB levy funds a wide range of activities in addition to the CITB Grant scheme.

A message from our new Chief Executive – Barry Neilson

As the previous Skills Director - Scotland & Northern Ireland for Cogent, the Sector Skills Council for the science based and polymer industries I have a good understanding of skills and training issues. Prior to this I was the Director in Scotland for the Chartered Institute of Building and was responsible for their UK wide policy and external relations team. My background is in Civil Engineering and I am a Chartered Civil Engineer. I am looking forward to embracing this new role as Chief Executive and facing the challenges that lie ahead.
